The things in our childhood home have such power over us. They bring back memories and take us back to our childhood. Thanks for sharing your memories with us, and I can't wait to read your book.

Comment on Ban the Burger Month

I read your editorial on "guardians of ageless honor preseving legacy of veterans". It was a wonderful piece and I wated to let you know that there are more of us veterans out here performing the same service for our veterans. I am an active member of the Millard Funeral Honors Detail of Omaha, NE. We extend funeral honors to approximately 150 deceased veterans a year in the metro Omaha area. We are a combination of American Legion Post 374 and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8334. We have 30 veterans in our volunteer ranks, with approximately 18 very active members performing this important service for our veterans. I salute the veteran volunteers of American Legion Post 760 and VFW Post 6664 for their dedication to our veterans and their families. As for myself, I am a Navy veteran and am retired from the Air Force, but my service to my fellow veterans and country has never stopped. The average age of our volunteer honor guard is 71 years old, and we have three female members. Great article, Tom.

Comment on The Bike Jump!

Great story. I'm from the 80's and we weren't hyper-protected either, although it was starting by the time I could ride a bike. I didn't wear a helmet most of the time though. Today, however, I would not even dare biking without a helmet, and I'm a full-grown adult.

Comment on The Stereo Console

Oh my gosh! The memories! We had one very similar to that one in shape and lines - in the late 60's. We were forbidden to touch it, but I remember being fascinated by the wires when Mom opened it up.

Comment on Food Stamps for College Kids

You and I lived in a different era. When I graduated from high school I went<br />to work for the Wurlitzer Co. to make money if I chose to go to college. When I decided to go 3 years later I didn't rely on mom or dad (already retired)for help. Put myself through 4 years of college and 2 of graduate school. In the off school summer I worked and bought my own car. Did not ever cross my mind to get food stamps. These entitlements will ruin our country. If you want something WORK for it. You had the right idea! Your better off because of it.

Comment on The Stereo Console

Oh my gosh, what a trip back in time! I had forgotten that ugly thing that lived in the living room during my childhood. And the tubing! I remember getting a look at all that. Wow. Amazing how far technology has come, huh?

Comment on On Detroit and Muscle Cars

I was just thinking about On Detroit and Muscle Cars and you've really helped out. I do think that 'reflecting confidence and optimism' is a bit short-sighted in the face of hard facts, though … a million muscle cars and the gas they burn have definitely contributed to the situation today.

Comment on On Detroit and Muscle Cars

Ha ha! Good point ... but the Chevelle came from a very different era than the one we currently live in. There will always be nostalgia for the past. Unfortunately though, the conditions in the past that brought about the cars we had then will never be recreated. You’re right, we don't need bland knock-offs ... but we do need realistic MPG figures.

Comment on The Right to Cuss

I'd rather dis-cuss, then cuss!
