Red Ink Did Me Good

Here's yet another trend in which we're turning our kids into a bunch of softies. Schools are banning the use of red ink.

My second grade teacher (we referred to her in private as Sister Mary Brass Knuckles) would never go along with that. Her red ink did me good.

Loved you article on the RED marking pens.

The good nuns at Sacred Heart grade school in the East End(now called Shadyside) used them with reckless abandon!

I am reading Bill O'Riley's recent book - (A Bold Piece of Humanity )

A lot of no nonsence nuns had an impact on him as well. We never really appreciated what a great education the nuns were providing for us until it was all over.

Boy did this hit home! I too had a Sister Mary Brass Knuckles and her pounding proper English into my brain helped me be a better writer, although I'll never acheive the notariaty of your esteemed self. Thanks for sending.

I have taught in Catholic high schools for fifteen years. I have been told to not grade on incorrect spelling unless it is clearly stipulated in my course expectations, as well as not basing my World History class on too much memorization. Mr. Purcell's January 11 column was my first time reading him and I am impressed with how well he described the trend in education. Do not fear, though...several of my "old school" colleagues are witnessing (and cheering) the pendulum swing the other way.
